EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME FOR EL PRAT TEENAGER

EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME FOR EL PRAT TEENAGER

Real Club de Golf El Prat’s Eduard Rousaud Sabate had the experience of a lifetime when he was part of the European Junior Ryder Cup team at Golf Disneyland, in Paris.

Rousard Sabate, 18, scored a half-point for his team in the mixed fourballs – with Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad – but lost in both the foursomes and the singles, as the USA ran out narrow winners by a solitary point, 12½-11½, their sixth successive victory in the competition.

And even though Rousard Sabate cut his finger and was having treatment for the injury when his golfing idol, Tiger Woods, met the other members of the European team on the putting green, the Barcelona-based teenager was able to catch up with the 14-time Major winner shortly afterwards and enjoyed a long conversation with him.

Rousard Sabate explained: “It has undoubtedly been the best experience of my life. Representing Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup is something unique and special. Joining other players from all over Europe – who are usually rivals – with the same objective as yours and being part of the same team is the essence of the sport: friendship.
“It was a week I will never forget. Thanks to everybody who supports me every day, like my club, RCG El Prat and my family, I was able to enjoy and embrace all the little details of this wonderful experience.”

The Junior Ryder Cup has been a springboard for a number of notable Ryder Cuppers, including Spain’s Sergio Garcia (1995) and Rafa Cabrera Bello (1999), Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (2004), and the USA’s Tony Finau (2004, 2006), Jordan Spieth (2008, 2010), and Justin Thomas (2010).

It was a banner day for one UWG men’s golf freshman as the Wolves opened their season with a first round 288 at the Full Moon Invitational at Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Alabama.

Freshman Lucas Mota wasted no time in making a name for himself as he posted a school record 64 in his first collegiate round, breaking Charlie Durman’s previous school record of 65 shot back at the 2013 Matt Dyas Invitational.

Mota, a native of Barcelona, Spain, began his day on the first hole and after two pars, rattled off four straight birdies, and added a fifth on the ninth hole to make the turn at five-under. By the par five 15th, Mota had added three more birdies to reach eight under. Mota slipped and made bogeys at 16 and 18 and sandwiched his ninth birdie in on the 17th to finish seven-under par. Mota has a four shot lead going into tomorrow’s final round.

Meanwhile, senior Samuel Jones was putting together a solid round of his own, finishing with a three-under score of 68 in his first round of the new season. Jones made six birdies on the day, including four on the front nine. Jones is tied for second place individually.

Blake Kollin opened his West Georgia career with a 76 on Monday, making just one birdie on the day, and putting him in a 25th place tie. The biggest setback for the Milton, Georgia native was a double bogey on the par five 11th hole.

The final score counted for head coach Todd Selders and the Wolves was from Reece Moore who finished with an 80. Ethan Jones carded an 81 in his first competitive round of the new season. Moore is in a 34th place tie while Jones sits in 36th.

Dan Benson, who is competing as an individual, shot a 75 in the first round of his senior season, and sits in a 20th place tie individually. Benson’s round was highlighted by an eagle three on the par five eighth hole to close out his round.

The Wolves are in third place after one round of play, trailing the host Montevallo by 11 strokes. Christian Brothers sits in second place after an opening round 286.

The Full Moon Invitational will conclude tomorrow at Timberline Golf Club in Calera, Alabama.

The Catalan Pitch and Putt team is made up of Alex Albiñana Jr, European runner-up.

Ireland were unbeatable in Urduña (Basque Country) and won their sixth title 11 years after the last one.

Catalonia failed to win their third consecutive European Pitch and Putt Championship in a clear-cut 8.5-0.5 loss to Ireland in the decisive match. The Irish showed the best version of themselves in Urduña (Basque Country) and became the first team to close all the direct elimination rounds (MatchPlay) without losing any individual games. It has been 11 years since the green, white and orange team won the title (this weekend’s is the 6th), after the Catalan national team had beaten them in 2010 and had been absent in 2014.

Strokeplay sets the trend
The European started with two individual laps (strokeplay) of all the players, the sum of the results of which was to distribute the nine participating teams in 3 different groups. Catalonia was second to 29 strokes from the Irish, who with an overall record of -44 began to ratify their status as favourites. For their position, the Catalan national team faced in the second phase in Switzerland and Galicia, against whom they managed to reach the final group stage with not a few difficulties. Although the Swiss lost 9-0, the Galicians were able to draw (4.5-4.5) against the two-time champions.

Final three unevenly matched
The final group was played by Ireland, Catalonia and Andorra, who surpassed Great Britain in the previous qualifying round despite having been 10 times in the strokeplay. The Catalan national team beat the Andorran team (5,5-3,5) thanks to the foursome as, in singles, there was a tie to 3. The last day was the duel between the Irish and Catalans, which was a final but in this European premiered the final triangular format. The team was made up of Emili Sanmartín, Eric Puig, Fernando Cano, José Iglesias, David Riera and Alex Albiñana Jr, who scored the only half point against Ireland, drawing their individual match.
