PINK COURSE

Pink course

The Pink course is one of the most enjoyable layouts – and course designer Greg Norman’s favourite. It starts with a narrow and very technical first nine holes and a demanding second nine where recovery shots play a key role in ensuring a good score. The long par-three 6th and the always-fearsome 17th are the most outstanding holes on this course. The daunting par-three 6th leaves few players unscathed. The high, volcano-shaped green bounces any shot that is not spot-on to the surrounding waste bunker. This hole, one of the course’s most memorable, will leave lasting memories. The 17th is a tough uphill par four where the tee shot is once again key to posting a good score. The bunker on the right of the drive’s descent is one of the most frequented areas of the course as players are forced to avoid the hazard running along the entire left side of the hole. The semi-blind green approach requires a high, well-directed flight to avoid the bunkers at the front and rear of the green, leaving a long putt on its fast surface. Perhaps one of the course’s most complicated holes is the 8th, which is again surrounded by trees on both sides. It takes a long, well-centred tee shot to minimise the distance of the approach shot to a small green well defended by three bunkers and the surrounding pines.

This par five, with a slight dogleg to the right, makes for a challenging start of your round of golf. Bunkers flank the fairway both at the front and in the second swing zone. The narrow lengthwise green is easy to miss on either side. Its multiple landing areas and length make it difficult to clear the hole in two putts if the approach falls too far off-target.

Narrow and wooded on both sides, this par four demands precision both on the tee shot and the approach to the green. It’s crucial to keep to the fairway to have a good angle for your second shot, so line takes precedence over distance. Its high green, well defended by a short left bunker, can be tricky for players who have yet to master their flop shot.

The course’s shortest par three is a good chance to shave a point off your scorecard, but if you fail to lead off well, getting out of the surrounding forest can be a daunting task.

Short and attainable par four through the woods, you still need to keep within the fairway to reach the green safely. The pine tree in the middle is the target you should drive for from the tee. Its green has tough flag positions tempting players to seek it out, since the approach is usually with an open club.

This par four leaves the wooded area behind. Its wide, downhill fairway allows players to seek a long tee shot, simplifying the second shot with a short iron to a green well defended by numerous bunkers.

In the wooded area again, this par four demands accuracy and a longish tee off as a prelude to the delicate second swing to a narrow, elevated green with a front bunker that comes into play prominently. It is important to take the flag’s position into account when choosing the right club for the approach to the green, since the shot is blind.

After three tense holes (Holes 6, 7 & 8), the course gives players a breather with this straight-ahead, feasible par five, where players with good swings can reach the green or its vicinity in two, leaving them with a good chance to subtract a shot or two from their scorecard. The right side of the fairway from the end of the tee shot to the green is lined with bunkers. The last three of these form the letters AGN, standing for “Architect Greg Norman”.

The beauty of this spectacular par five with a dogleg to the right is exceptional. From the tee on high, players must cross a riverbed and then, depending on the tee shot, get over or around a huge pine tree on their second shot. The approach to the green involves a steep incline that players must bear in mind to avoid getting trapped in one of the many deep bunkers along the way.

Course designer Greg Norman’s preferred hole. A demanding uphill par four with a dogleg to the left, where players need to be on their game to avoid the seven bunkers that surround both tee and green. The tee shot must search the fairway taking into account the steep right-left slope, and the second shot has to combine the adequate line and distance to reach the green. Recovering from failure to reach the green is quite a challenge.

This long par three requires a long, accurate tee shot to avoid the bunkers that line the long green. No half-measures here, but veer too far away from the centre line and you will be hard put to save par.

This par four (dogleg left) enters the wooded section of the course. The tee shot requires more accuracy than distance, the main goal being to avoid the bunkers on the right side of the fairway. Once you reach the fairway, the approach shot to the green is tense because of hazards on either side, but with a short iron you should have a good chance to trim down your score.

This par four has one of the course’s toughest opening shots. The forest and bunkers on both sides of the narrow fairway (dogleg right) make it essential to choose your shot and club very carefully. After a successful tee shot, the approach to the high, narrow green that spreads diagonally has to be very accurate despite the short distance.

The tee shot is of the essence on this par four. If you reach the steep downward sloping section of the fairway, the second shot has to be very short. Otherwise the distance will be considerable, and a highly accurate shot will be needed, bearing in mind the array of bunkers and the lake to the right that defend its dual-platform green.

This par five is a hole where orderly play has its reward, but any mistakes, particularly on the left side, can create havoc. The setback of the tees calls for great care on the opening shot, while the second shot presents a wealth of bunkers to the right of a narrowing fairway and a hazard to the left. The narrow, elevated green requires precision to avoid having the ball roll off. Heavy hitters can reach the green in two.
