WE ARE A CLUB COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Real Club de Golf El Prat, an example of sustainability

We are firmly committed to respecting the environment and the natural landscape surrounding our facilities, reducing our carbon footprint and reducing our water footprint.

As a result of this commitment, the club has received recognition such as the BIOSPHERE certificate obtained in 2022 and revalidated annually until the present day.

BIOSPHERE is the internationally recognised sustainability certification that meets the criteria and requirements of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Flora and fauna

ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION

The current location of Real Club de Golf El Prat was – prior to the club moving there – home to native species; the land was covered by Holm oak, the Mediterranean scrub and oak, but was already being affected by the invasion of Aleppo pine.    The RCGP responded by planting 8,000 Holm oaks, 1,500 oak trees, along with different types of shrubs along the curse.  The outcome was around 25 hectares of woodland, which is now home to new bird species including the song thrush, the long-tailed tit, the short-toed treecreeper and the warbler; squirrels, foxes, wild boar and the Mediterranean mole are among the mammals.  Not only has the habitat of those species been saved, but it has also been significantly increased.

The arrival of these new species was bolstered by planting 20 hectares of cereal crops. Many animals fed off them as they passed through and then settled there. The club is firmly committed to not polluting any of the existing aquifers.

Protecting and safeguarding the environment has not only cared for nature, but has also involved blending existing medieval ruins there into the landscape.

As regards water use, Real Club de Golf El Prat only irrigates 60 out of the total 220 hectares; it uses purified water from a module constructed at the Terrassa-Les Fonts tertiary water purification plant.

Real Club de Golf has not only contributed to not damaging the area or not being a blot on this natural landscape, but it has also strived to enhance and safeguard one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of the province of Barcelona.  Its endeavours have resulted in accolades such as the BIOSPHERE certificate awarded to the Club obtained in 2022 and renewed in 2023.

Renewable energies

COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL ENERGY

As regards the use of renewable energies, Real Club de Golf El Prat is also firmly committed to non-polluting energy; as set out in the Strategic Plan in the framework of the Sustainable Development Plans (SDGs), last December it began to install a photovoltaic roof, consisting of a total of 574 solar modules with power of 260 kW, in order to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to environmental sustainability and energy savings.

Environmentally responsible

SUSTAINABLE USE OF WATER

At Real Club de Golf El Prat, sustainability is a priority, especially when it comes to irrigation water management. The entity has implemented cutting-edge practices to ensure responsible and efficient use of this vital resource. One of the highlights is the presence of its own water treatment plant, which plays a crucial role in the water management cycle.

We use 100% regenerated water, which is not suitable for agricultural or human consumption.

The club’s treatment plant uses an advanced desalination process (EDR System) that converts wastewater into high quality reclaimed water. This renewed resource is used to irrigate the golf courses.

The use of reclaimed water not only demonstrates a commitment to environmental sustainability, but also reflects the club’s awareness of the importance of preserving local water resources. This measure not only reduces the club’s water footprint, but also serves as an example to the local community and the golf industry in general.

We recycle water from our Clubhouse to irrigate the course

The wastewater treatment plant installed in the Clubhouse demonstrates the club’s commitment to environmental conservation by effectively treating wastewater from showers, toilets and kitchen and reusing it to irrigate the course. After the process it goes to our pond to be reused. Another example of the Club’s commitment to the environment.

Lynx: latest irrigation technology

The new Lynx irrigation system implemented at Real Club de Golf El Prat represents a significant advance in water management. Its efficient and responsible approach optimises the use of this vital resource, ensuring that every drop is used intelligently and sustainably.
